Randolph Brown & Company was an identity of future soul star Randy Brown as he began a succesful solo career following a six-year spell as lead singer of The Newcomers at Stax.
After a 1974 single on the Stax-owned Truth label, Brown issued two promising singles on the obscure Black Magic Label, both of which were written and produced by Carl Smith and David Weatherspoon.
Both singles were snapped up by Mainstream Records for national release on their IX Chains label in 1975.
The second IX Chains single, ‘It Ain’t Like It Used To Be’. captured the mood of the troubled times as people faced the social and financial challenges of a deepening economic crisis. The song is relevant again today, of course, hence this timely revival.
