Tommy Hunt – Work Song b/w Oscar Brown Jr – Work Song – Outta Sight 7″

Tommy Hunt needs no introduction to Northern Soul and R&B collectors and has long been regarded as one of the true stalwarts of the scene – here Outta Sight presents his dancefloor version of “The Work Song” recorded for Scepter Records in 1962. Hunt’s stand-out recording joins a long line of covers played on the scene over the years including Cleveland Robinson, Trade Martin, Nina Simone, Pat Lundy, James Royal et al. Oscar Brown Jr was a multi-talented singer/songwriter and civil rights activist who burst onto the R&B scene in 1960 with his classic, jazz-infused, breakthrough album ‘Sin & Soul’. Not only did the album provide us with the original vocal version of “Work Song” but it also spawned Mod anthems “Humdrum Blues” and “Watermelon Man”.
